How do I tell if my solar is working?

⚡ 1. Check the Solar Controller (Charge Controller)
- Locate your solar charge controller (often in a cabinet or electrical bay).
- It should display:
- Current voltage from the solar panels (typically 18–22V when sunny)
- Charging status (bulk, absorb, float)
- Amperage going to the batteries
- If it’s dark or covered, it will show zero or idle.
- ➡️ If the screen is blank or showing zero volts/amps during full sun, your system may not be functioning.
🔋 2. Check Battery Voltage Over Time
- Use your RV monitor panel or a multimeter to track house battery voltage.
- With sunlight and no big loads, voltage should slowly rise above 13V.
- If it's stuck around 12.3V or lower all day in full sun, the solar isn't charging.
🧪 3. Shading & Panel Inspection
- Inspect the solar panels on the roof for:
- Cleanliness (dirt blocks power)
- Cracks or damage
- Shading from AC units, vents, or trees
- Even small shadows can significantly drop output.
🔌 4. Test Using Load
- Disconnect from shore power and turn off the generator.
- Run a moderate DC load (like lights or fan).
- Watch to see if your charge controller shows current flowing into the batteries (amps increasing).
- If yes, solar is doing its job.
🧰 5. Fuses and Wiring
- Check for blown fuses or tripped breakers between the panels and the controller.
- Inspect wiring for corrosion or damage.
